which appeared on Chinese regulator TENAA's website early last week, has indicated that the Galaxy W20 5G is just a rebranded version of the Galaxy Fold 5G model with an improved processor, not a new smartphone.
Samsung Galaxy W20 5G Likely to Be Rebranded Galaxy
The specifications listed by TENAA for the Samsung SM-W2020 are considered to be the model number of the Galaxy W20 5G model with the Samsung Galaxy Fold 5G specifications, excluding processor clock speed and battery size.
In addition, photos added by the Chinese regulator look similar to Samsung's first foldable smartphone.
The TENAA listing for the Samsung SM-W2020 shows processor clock speed (for 1 core + 3 core + 4 core setup) at 2.956GHz / 2.4GHz / 1.78GHz and is different from 2.84GHz + 2.41GHz / 1.78GHz Snapdragon 855 SoC introduced in Galaxy Fold.
Updated clock speed match for the default clock speed offered by the Snapdragon 855+ SoC. So, there is a big chance that the Galaxy W20 5G is powered by the Snapdragon 855+ SoC, rather than the Snapdragon 855 used by the Galaxy Fold.
In addition, the battery capacity is 4,135mAh which is different from the 4380mAh in the Galaxy Fold 5G version of the Galaxy Fold 4G version.
To recall, Samsung launched the Galaxy Fold back in February in both 4G and 5G variants, although the phone's actual release date was deferred due to quality issues.
The Samsung Galaxy Fold finally went on sale in September this year, starting with the company's home market and has since reached several other countries including India and China.
Now in partnership with China Telecom, Samsung is gearing up to release the 5G version of the phone with the Galaxy W20 5G branding.
China Telecom and Samsung are hosting a press event on 19 November in the country for the unveiling of the phone.
Telecom operators are likely to carry phones exclusively in the country. As always, we will bring you all the details here on Gadgets 360, when the company tells them.
Meanwhile, Samsung has reportedly increased investment in Dowoo Insis, which sells ultra-thin glass (UTG) to the smartphone maker, for use in its foldable smartphone.
According to a report by South Korean publication ET News, Samsung wants more UTG panels and thus, the company is paying more money to Dowoo Insis to increase its production capacity.
